Objectives: Following this session, participants will be able to:
1. Name one programmatic and one administrative change to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) at the California Department of Public Health, Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch, as a result of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
2. Describe the new SNAP-Ed funding model to California's local health departments from the California Department of Public Health, Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch.
3. Identify one opportunity for schools to partner and collaborate with local health departments to support the local SNAP-Ed activities.
Description: The Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch (NEOPB) within the California Department of Public Health supports nutrition education and obesity prevention activities with funding from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed). The passage of federal legislation, the 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA 2010), presents significant opportunities and challenges, primarily decreased revenue over time. NEOPB has made informed programmatic and administrative changes to its organizational business model to ensure sustainable state and local infrastructure in nutrition education and obesity prevention program efforts. NEOPB has transitioned to a new funding model in which local health departments are awarded SNAP-Ed grants. The new funding model provides a more equitable distribution of nutrition education and obesity prevention funds and resources and ensures that SNAP-Ed activities are streamlined and coordinated throughout the state. In this presentation, speakers will summarize impacts and opportunities of the HHFKA 2010 on state and local SNAP-Ed work and share the direction of NEOPB's SNAP-Ed Program moving forward to best serve the local health department funding model and the obesity prevention needs of California's diverse communities.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Talarico is currently the Chief of the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch of the California Department of Public Health. He is a board-certified pediatrician and is also board-eligible in Preventive Medicine. He previously served as the Chief of the Immunization Branch with the California Department of Public Health. Prior to serving with CDPH he was Acting Director and Medical Director of the Bioterrorism Preparedness Program for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and held the positions of Medical Director for Immunization Program and Bureau Director for Child and Adolescent Health with the New York State Department of Health.

Speaker Bio:
Michele van Eyken joined the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (NEOP) Branch in April 2012, after thirteen years of leadership in the California WIC Program, thirteen years directing public health nutrition programs in local government, three years as a Public Health Nutrition Consultant in farmworker health clinics and three as a Peace Corps Volunteer and nutrition survey logistics officer in sub-Saharan Africa. The last is the only nutrition work she has undertaken during her career in which obesity was not a public health concern. Her education includes a BA in Sociology from Occidental College in Los Angeles, coursework in community dietetics at Oregon State University in Corvallis and a Masters in Public Health Nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley.
