Objectives:
- Participants will be able to explain the process to implement cooking demonstrations by food service workers in the classroom
- Participants will be able to name benefits of employing food service workers to execute simple cooking demonstrations in the classroom
- Participants will be able to identify barriers to implementing FSW cooking demonstrations in the classroom
Description: At CSNA 2012 we presented "Elevating the Lunch Lady": Ways to improve food service worker's knowledge and status in the school. This year's goal was to further enhance food service worker's self efficacy in addition to inspiring students to prepare and consume fruit and vegetable snacks at home.
The presentation will review the bridging of the cafeteria to the classroom by food service workers conducting cooking demonstrations in the classroom.
The discussion will center on the training and support required, results of the limited evaluation of food service workers, teachers, and students with special attention to the benefits and barriers of this project.

Nori Grossmann - Alameda County Nutrition Services
Speaker Bio:
Nori Grossmann, MPH, RD is currently a public health nutritionist at Alameda County Public Health Department/Nutrition Services Program.
She has over 20 years of public health experience working with a variety of low-income areas that include urban and rural areas. Previously she educated rural Guatemalans, health care workers, and other Peace Corp volunteers on nutrition related topics with the goal to improve the health of Guatemalans.
In California, she was the WIC Director at La Clinica de la Raza in Oakland for ten years, managing the program and promoting healthy food choices for Women, Infants, and Children. Following WIC, she worked in the Public Health Department in Berkeley then moved to Alameda County Public Health Department. She serves primarily Oakland Unified Schools located in low income areas, helping to create and sustain community change using healthy eating and physical activity messages.
She also provides nutrition counseling to minors at juvenile hall. She is a registered Dietitian and holds a Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley.

Speaker Bio:
Joyce Peters received her BA in Nutrition from Queens College, City University of New York and her MS in Nutrition and Public Health from Pennsylvania State University. Joyce has worked as a dietitian in clinical settings and as a public health nutritionist. Taking a lengthy break from nutrition, Joyce owned and operated her own children's bookstore.
For the last 4 years, she has worked to promote nutrition education at Oakland Unified School District. This is the perfect juncture of a love of foods and nutrition science and the necessity to promote a great product, school food.
