Objectives: - Understand CDE's role in regulating LSWPs
- Learn how a local school district successfully revised the LSWP with input from Administrators and stakeholders and the resources they created to streamline the process
- Hear best practices and processes

Description: How does a district come together to make the Local School Wellness Policy a reality? Wellness Policies can be intimidating, but they don't have to be! Come hear how a few key resources and strategies can support you in your role as a school nutrition specialist and strengthen student wellness in your district. Learn how to successfully revise your policy, with best practices from a school district and resources from CDE. Discover ways to gain financial support for nutrition services through the Local Control Accountability Plan, and gain stakeholder involvement on your wellness committee. Together we will explore how state level resources and community partnerships can strengthen schools as the heart of health.

Heather Reed, M.A., R.D. - California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division
Speaker Bio:
Heather Reed is a Nutrition Education Consultant with the California Department of Education (CDE). She worked on the planning team for the California Smarter Lunchrooms Movement. She also oversees projects related to school wellness policy and nutrition education, including the Nutrition Education Resource Guide, and local school wellness policy implementation. She was the CDE lead on the planning committee for the 2007 and 2009 School Wellness Conferences. She is the co-chair for the California Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative and also serves on the California Action for Healthy Kids executive committee. A Registered Dietitian, she earned a MA from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Science from University of Delaware.

Peter Wright - California School Boards Association
Speaker Bio:
Peter is a Policy and Programs Officer for the California School Boards Association where he supports the state's nearly 1,000 school boards in identifying and implementing strategies that improve educational outcomes for all children. Prior to joining CSBA he worked in the California Governor's Office, California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office, and taught elementary school in rural North Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Occidental College and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California.

Leeza Lindsay, RD - Torrance Unified School District
Speaker Bio:
Leeza Lindsay is the Assistant Director of Nutrition Services for Torrance Unified School District. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Nutritional Science and is a Registered Dietitian. She is an active member of the Nutrition Standards Committee for the California School Nutrition Association (CSNA). Leeza is the Coordinator for the Wellness Policy Committee in her district. She successfully revised Torrance USD's Wellness Policy last school year and has taken steps to educate key stakeholders in the district about the changes made to the policy.

Phoebe Copp - Dairy Council of California
Speaker Bio:
Phoebe Copp is a Community Nutrition Adviser with Dairy Council of California where she supports nutrition education in Central Valley schools. In this role she actively participates on school district Wellness Policy Committees to help districts revise their wellness policies and put them into action. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Clinical Nutrition from the University of California, Davis.
