"Healthy Ever After: A Community Partnership to Provide Free Nutrition Education in Elementary Schools"

Objectives: Following this presentation, participants will be able to discuss how school food service/nutrition staff can work with a hospital dietetics staff to develop and establish a successful school-based nutrition education program by partnering with local school districts and parent volunteers.

Description: Come learn about a successful grant-funded district-wide nutrition education program for elementary school students which mobilizes parent volunteers to teach nutrition lessons in the classroom (or in an assembly format). The presenter will explain program development, implementation, and logistics. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss their districts' resources, and the possibility of implementing a program like Healthy Ever After in their respective districts.

Speaker Bio:
Emily Parker, MS, RD has been a Registered Dietitian since 2008. She specializes in pediatric nutrition, splitting her time at TMMC between the outpatient clinic and community education events. She enjoys helping families discover how good food nurtures our bodies and helps prevent disease. Ms. Parker completed the Healthy Kitchens Healthy Lives seminar at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in 2008, and obtained a Certificate of Pediatric Weight Management in 2009. Ms. Parker also holds a position as a lecturer at California State University, Long Beach. In her free time, Ms. Parker enjoys cooking, biking, and backpacking with her husband Sam. Ms. Parker is thrilled to participate in CalSNA Annual Meeting, and hopes that this presentation will empower others to start programs like Healthy Ever After!
