Objectives: Participants will learn how student leadership development has been linked to increase participation in the school meal program. The OUHSD Farm to School Program will share our program model and how we provide nutrition education and garden-based learning to students at 8 high schools.
Description: The OUHSD Farm to School Program began in 2016 and serves thousands of students each year throughout Oxnard Union High School District. Student leadership, garden-based experiential learning models, nutrition education programs, school wellness programs, and community-building are strategies that have contributed to our overall program success. We maintain 11 school gardens and coordinate with numerous student groups within eight high schools, develop curriculum for teachers to integrate Farm to School programming within their classrooms, facilitate students with opportunities to give feedback to the cafeteria and contribute to recipe development, educate students about careers in local agriculture, and much more!
