  • Reduce wasted food generated by our kitchens by donating it throughout Livermore and nearby cities.
  • Learn how to use a current problem to help feed communities in need of prepared food.
  • Create a model that can sustain itself at other Nutrition Services Departments.
  • Reduce the amount of edible food that is currently thrown into the landfill.
  • Improve waste sorting at our sites by reducing the amount of contamination in our sorting bins.

Description: Wasted food in the Child Nutrition Services world is a problem that our staff encounters every day. At the Livermore Unified School District Campus Catering, we are committed to reducing wasted food through source reduction and recovery, and to make sure all our students have the right to be fed and nourished. With our partnership with the Alameda County Waste Management Authority, StopWaste, we have been launching food share carts district-wide to reduce the amount of eatable food that is thrown into our landfill bins and to use that food to feed our students instead. Now that our food share cart program is implemented and successful at each of our sites, we are moving forward with implementing a food donation program district-wide. Join us and hear about our best practices and learn how to recreate similar programs in your school district!

Lenea Pollett - Livermore Unified School District
Speaker Bio:
Lenea is proud to join the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District and lead the Campus Catering Department. Her passion for nutrition and health began in college where she was a member of the swim team. She quickly learned nutrition played a valuable role in her performance. Her nutrition degrees are from California State University, Long Beach and then Loma Linda University where she also completed her certifications as a Registered Dietitian and School Nutrition Specialist. She then expanded her nutrition education outreach to working with districts throughout the state on a project called, "Network for a Healthy California". This project supported her goal to improve the nutritional status of children and families. She plans to continue her passion for student's health at Livermore. In addition, Campus Catering is implementing the countywide, StopWaste K-12 Smart Initiative on all campuses focusing on feeding students first, their families and ensuring all extra food is donated to the community.
