Objectives: Participants will leave with an increased understanding of regulatory compliance and practical implementation resources.

Description: Accommodating special dietary needs is sometimes mandatory, often a challenge and can be confusing. This session will define what are special needs as well as diet and allergy restrictions. Successful school-parent partnerships will be discussed with district, medical professional, and State agency experts who will be on-hand to provide first-hand perspectives and share best practices.

Lori Porter - California Department of Education
Speaker Bio:
Lori Porter graduated from California State University, Chico, with a Bachelors of Science in Dietetics. She is currently working as a Child Nutrition Consultant for the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division. Lori previously worked as part of the Clinical Nutrition team for both Stanford University Medical Center and Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland.

Tiffanie Bas - Long Beach USD
Speaker Bio:
Tiffanie Bas is the Administrative Dietitian at Long Beach Unified School District. She received her undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at California State University, Long Beach and completed her dietetic internship at University of California, Berkeley. Prior to working at Long Beach Unified, she was a Nutrition Educator at the Network for a Healthy California, and Consultant for Lawndale Elementary School District's Food Services Department, where several schools were awarded both gold and silver awards for the Alliance for a Healthier generation. She is a proud new mommy of a 5-month old baby boy.

Delise Barringer - Adelanto SD
Speaker Bio:
Delise Barringer is the Child Nutrition Services Director for the Adelanto Elementary School District. She manages the team that provides National School Lunch and breakfast services to just over 9000 students. Programs include breakfast in the classroom at seven schools, traditional breakfast at eight sites, lunch services at each of these locations and after school snacks. Delise has over fifteen years' experience in school nutrition and is an active member with the California School Nutrition Association and California Association of School Business Officials. Delise has also been successful in bringing over $980,000 in additional grant funds to her program in Adelanto, including the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant and the Breakfast Expansion grant. Adelanto received the National School Excellence award in 2006.

Jose Alvarado - Fresno USD
Speaker Bio:
Jose Alvarado is the Food Services Director for Fresno Unified School District. He has been in K-12 for over 27 years and 5 years as Food Services Director. He attended and graduated from California State University - Fresno with a degree in Information Systems and a MBA (Master in Business Administration. Each day his team prepares over 88,000 meals. Including 25,000 -Breakfast, 55,000 - Lunches, and 8,000 afterschool snacks at 104 serving sites. In addition, each day over 800 special diet meals are prepared to meet the special dietary needs of students. Over 82% of the students in Fresno Unified School District are eligible for free meals and operate 83 "Provision II" sites where all students eat free.
