Objectives:
- Participants will understand the new Local School Wellness Policy Requirements.
- Participants will understand specific examples of the USDA proposed competitive food and beverage rule.
- Participants will consider new Local School Wellness Policy language using competitive food and beverage examples.
Description: Did you know that the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act adds new Local School Wellness Policy requirements? Did you know that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be releasing new competitive food and beverage standards? Come hear how each set of rules will affect your district, then participate in an activity to help your district prepare for the changes!

Speaker Bio:
Mike Danzik is a Nutrition Education Consultant for the California Department of Education. His previous responsibilities included school meal state-wide marketing and outreach efforts, competitive food and beverage implementation pilot under Senate Bill 19, and Local School Wellness Policy development and implementation.
Mike's currently responsibilities include competitive food and beverage requirements, access to free water in schools, and implementing the new USDA school meal pattern.
Mike holds a Master's in Public Health Nutrition and is a Registered Dietitian.

Heather Reed - California Department of Education
Speaker Bio:
Heather Reed, is a Nutrition Education Consultant with the California Department of Education. She oversees projects related to local school wellness policy and nutrition education, including the 2011 Nutrition Education Resource Guide, local school wellness implementation, training workshops, and is the Nutrition Services Division liaison for the Torlakson Team California for Healthy Kids Campaign. She serves on the California Action for Healthy Kids executive committee and has served on her daughter's district health and wellness committee. A Registered Dietitian, she holds a MA from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Science from University of Delaware.
