Description: Participate in a fun game format based on the Price is Right to learn more about the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement (SLM) and how you can join the movement in California. This session will cover the principles of SLM and provide attendees with examples (and costs) of popular resources used by California schools to implement SLM successfully in their schools. SLM is an evidence-based way to influence the physical environment of school cafeterias to gently nudge students to select and consume the healthier food choices offered in school lunch. Be there to win both knowledge and fun!

Heather Reed - California Department of Education
Speaker Bio:
Heather Reed is a Nutrition Education Consultant with the California Department of Education. She co-chairs the California Local School Wellness Policy collaborative and is on the leadership for Smarter Lunchrooms Movement (SLM) of California collaborative. She was the project director for the California's Team Nutrition SLM grant project. Heather worked as a public health nutritionist with California Department of Public Health, and as an adjunct nutrition professor. A Registered Dietitian, she earned her MA from San Francisco State University and her BS from University of Delaware.
Crystal Young - California Department of Education
Speaker Bio:
Crystal Young is an Associate Governmental Program Analyst with the California Department of Education. She has coordinated training, funding, and evaluation for the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act Reauthorization, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, and Team Nutrition SLM of California grant. Prior to CDE she coordinated collaborative youth development projects and education services for the Hennepin County, Minneapolis Public Schools, and Twin Cities Union Gospel Mission in Minnesota. Crystal earned her MA in Special Education from Bethel University and BS in Social Science from University of Northwestern St. Paul.
Candice Sainz - Dairy Council of California
Speaker Bio:
With an insatiable appetite for new experiences, Candice Sainz travels across California and the country promoting nutrition education and school wellness. As Community Nutrition Adviser for Dairy Council of California, Ms. Sainz works with school foodservice staff, educators and community members to make the healthy choice the easy choice at school, in the community and even at home. Ms. Sainz holds a bachelor's degree in science from California State University, Fullerton and is a certified Smarter Lunchrooms Technical Advising Professional.
