Objectives: Participants will:
- Learn about new state-funded startup and expansion grants for after-the-bell breakfast programs at high-need schools
- Become aware of grant writing resources to support the application process
- Learn about tools & guidance to gain support from school administrators, including evidence linking breakfast and academic success, and model language to include breakfast as a strategy for addressing Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) priority areas
Description: When students come to school hungry, they struggle to focus and learn. Serving breakfast after the bell has proven to be an effective way to boost school breakfast participation, but there can be barriers to buy-in and implementation. Learn about resources to support after-the-bell programs, including new state grants; resources for developing grant proposals; and tools to gain administrative support. These resources include case studies of California districts with successful programs, evidence linking breakfast to academic success, and model language to use school breakfast practices as a strategy for addressing priority areas within school district Local Control Accountability Plans.

Speaker Bio:
Tracey Patterson, MPH is the Director of Legislation at California Food Policy Advocates. Tracey advocates for state policy and funding that increases low-income Californians access to healthy, affordable food.
Steven Yokoi - California Department of Education- Nutrition Services Division
Speaker Bio:
Steven Yokoi is a Staff Services Manager in the School Nutrition Programs Unit of the CDE Nutrition Services Division. In this role, his responsibilities include management of the state breakfast and summer meal startup and expansion grant program.
