Objectives: Strategize ways to ensure nutrition is included in your district's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)
Description: Don't let your nutrition program be overlooked when it comes to the LCAP table. Your district's LCAP presents a unique opportunity to serve up funding to your wellness policy priorities. During this educational session, you will learn about the LCAP process, the eight state priorities and the district template for establishing goals, actions and indicators of success-all of which can align with wellness policies and move you forward on your implementation. Learn how to align your wellness policy with the LCAP priorities and indicators. Review survey results conducted by the California Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative from California schools. Hear about success stories from districts that have received funding, staffing and/or support for wellness policies from the LCAP advisory work group.

Speaker Bio:
Shannan Young works for the Dairy Council of California as the Food Systems Program Manager focusing on environmental supports for healthy food access, serves on the California Farm to School Network steering committee and co-chairs the California Local School Wellness Policy and Smarter Lunchrooms Movement of California collaboratives.
Heather Reed - California Department of Education
Speaker Bio:
Heather Reed is a Nutrition Education Consultant with the California Department of Education (CDE). As the Department's lead for student wellness, she co-chairs the California Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative and the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement of California Collaborative. She was on the planning committees for the 2007 and 2009 School Wellness Conferences. She also participated in the wellness committee for her daughter's school district. She was formerly a public health nutritionist with California Department of Public Health, Head Start nutrition coordinator, and WIC coordinator as well as an adjunct professor for Los Rios Community college.
A Registered Dietitian, she earned a MA from San Francisco State University and a BS from University of Delaware. In her spare time, she likes to camp and host dinner parties.

Melissa Cannon - California Food Policy Advocates
Speaker Bio:
Melissa Cannon works to promote access to nutritious, affordable foods in the federal nutrition programs at the California Food Policy Advocates. Over the last year Melissa has been investigating how school districts are utilizing Local Control and Accountability Plans to support the school nutrition programs. Results from a statewide LCAP scan and interviews with school food service directors have informed the development of advocacy resources for school food service directors and school food advocates to encourage local adoption of school nutrition programs into LCAPs.
