"How Legislation Affects Your School Meals Program"Key Areas: Administration

Objectives: Attendees will receive information about current legislation that affects their school meal programs, including Child Nutrition Reauthorization (2015), and will receive a primer on upcoming legislation. They will also receive information on how they can partner with community-based organizations to support their advocacy efforts, and will receive a list of community-based organizations in California that are involved in anti-hunger work and could serve as potential partners.
Description: San Diego Hunger Coalition will discuss legislative updates and deliver an expert analysis of state and federal legislation that affects school meal programs, including the Child Nutrition Reauthorization - 2015. We will present a case study that can be used as a model by school districts on how they can work with community-based organizations, such as the San Diego Hunger Coalition, to support their advocacy efforts that benefit the mission of their respective nutrition services departments. San Diego Hunger Coalition advocates for improvements to anti-hunger policies and federal programs, including school meal programs. We act as a resource for county, state, and federal policymakers, providing research summaries, policy analyses, and case studies of what's happening in San Diego to inform their policy decisions; and coordinate local advocates to support state and federal legislation.

Speaker Bio:
As Senior Program Manager of School Meals, Melanie Petersen manages the San Diego Hunger Coalition�s efforts to increase access to and utilization of federal school meal programs for San Diego County school districts. With a background in program management and corporate development, Melanie�s interest in social justice was sparked through her work at San Diego Habitat for Humanity and at Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco where she managed their respective volunteer departments and scaled their corporate development programs. She has experience working within school districts with large underserved populations in her past role as Program Director of International House of Blues Foundation (IHOBF), and through her work as Education and Outreach Manager of Mainly Mozart.
